Introduction: The Perfect Harness for an Adventurous Dog
What better harness could fit a dog named Bilbo than this one? Inspired by the adventurous spirit of its namesake, this harness is designed for comfort, durability, and style.
Material and Craftsmanship
Waxy Leather: Crafted from waxy leather, this harness is both soft and has a nice pull-up effect, ensuring it looks as good as it feels. The bottom part of the harness is made from black chrome tan leather, finished with turned edges all around for a sleek, polished look.
Vegetable-Tanned Leather: The handle, D-ring holder, pouch strap holders, and other small features are made with durable vegetable-tanned leather, decorated with a simple pattern to add a touch of craftsmanship. The hardware is brass-plated, providing both strength and a classic look.
Functional Design
Detachable Pouches: The pouches are detachable, perfect for carrying essentials. While the closure looks like a button/cord system, it actually uses magnets hidden behind the flap for a seamless and functional design. The decorative button/toggle not only enhances the aesthetic but also helps lift the flap.
Spacious and Practical: The pouches are spacious enough to hold two dog meals, treats and waste bags, making it perfect for long adventures.
Design Process
The design of this harness is based on a classic ‘K9 mini’ harness with a bit of extra space especially on the back. Originally, I considered using the two D-rings at the back to accommodate a roll-up extension or a cloak-like jacket, but I decided it might be too heavy for a dog of this size.
Additional Accessories
To complete this project, I also made a lead from rope and a small dog waste-bag holder that looks like a mini chest. While I don’t have a hot-foil press yet, I stamped the name and painted the letters with acrylic paint, adding a personalized touch.
